Romelia Flores is an IBM Distinguished Engineer, an IBM Master Inventor, and a member of our IBM Academy of Technology’s Core Management Team.
Over the past couple of months, Romelia has received numerous awards and honors that showcase her technical eminence both inside and outside of IBM. The impact that her client projects have had over the years is reflected in her intellectual capital. She serves as a technical role model for students, Latinos and IBMers around the world.

Now, let’s review Romelia’s impressive awards and honors – all of which happened this year, and demonstrate why she is a “great mind” of our generation.
2016 Great Minds in STEM Lifetime Achievement Award – This award is for individuals who are upper level technical executives with over 20 years of experience in STEM. These individuals have contributed significantly to their organization and to society through their work. Romelia was afforded this honor due to her significant Intellectual Capital contributions of twenty-five patents and another thirty patents pending. These patents reflect the innovation resulting from the solutions she created with several of IBM’s leading clients.
2016 AoT Lifetime Achievement Award – Romelia received this award for driving our Academy’s Affiliate Program Manager for the past four years. This role is key to the IBM Academy of Technology’s (AoT) Core Operations team. In this capacity, Romelia led a vibrant community of forty-five AoT Affiliates around the world and two Emerging Affiliates. She created new initiatives for the Affiliates such as the Exemplary Affiliate initiative, the Affiliate Insights Best Practice Sharing and the foundation for the Affiliate Social Eminence initiative.
Dallas Business Journal’s 2016 Women in Technology [more…] – The Women in Technology Award honors tech-focused women who drive innovation, lead technology companies and shape the local community. Romelia’s Patent Portfolio, Chief Architect Role in the IBM Global Solution Center and role on various boards in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex and the Dallas Innovation Alliance were the basis for this honor.
IEEE MetroCon 2016 Keynote Speaker – MetroCon is an annual engineering conference hosted by the IEEE-Fort Worth. Metrocon 2016 focused on enabling attendees to rapidly grasp the technical and societal implications of some of the most promising and innovative new developments and ideas. In October 2016, Romelia was the first ever female keynote speaker for this conference. Her keynote was entitled “Engineering Through Discovery” and focused on Cloud Based Watson Cognitive Services and the Quantum Experience.
SWE’16 Plenary Speaker – Romelia Flores is a plenary speaker at the Society of Women Engineer’s Conference in 2016 on the topic of “Beyond Robots and Jetpacks: The Next Decade of Engineering.” The panelists will explore what the future holds for engineering beyond today’s 3D printing, virtual reality and self-driving cars. They will discuss how the role of “engineer” will be increasingly central to reshaping the world we live in and the envisioned future for the practice of engineering, the engineering workforce, new trends in technology and disruptive technologies.
